Pawn promotion is the transformation of a pawn that reaches the board’s last rank: the 8th for White, the 1st for Black. That pawn disappears immediately and turns, at the player’s choice, into a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. It’s one of the rare moments where you can literally create a new piece mid-game.

How to promote a pawn

Just push or capture with your pawn all the way to the last rank. The move is notated with an = sign followed by the chosen piece (for example e8=Q). No other piece needs to be present or absent on the board beforehand: you can promote even if your original queen is already on the board.

In the vast majority of cases you’ll choose the queen: it’s the most powerful piece, and nothing theoretically stops you from having several of them on the board at once.

Underpromotion: when to choose something other than a queen

Underpromotion is the deliberate choice of a weaker piece than the queen: a rook, bishop, or knight. It sounds counterintuitive, but two situations make it useful:

  • Promoting to a knight can deliver an immediate check or fork that a queen couldn’t, because of its unique L-shaped movement.
  • Promoting to a queen sometimes creates an immediate stalemate (the enemy king would have no legal move left): choosing a more modest rook or bishop avoids that trap and lets you keep winning normally.

Underpromotion stays rare, but it’s one of those situations worth being able to spot in the endgame.

Can a pawn promote to a king?

No, never. Only the queen, rook, bishop, and knight are allowed. A pawn can’t stay a pawn either: promotion is mandatory the moment it reaches the last rank; it must turn into one of those four pieces.

Can you have several queens at the same time?

Yes, with no theoretical limit. Nothing stops you from having two, three, or even nine queens on the board if all your pawns manage to promote. In practice, just having a second queen is almost always enough to win the game.

Does promotion default to a queen automatically?

No, it’s always the player’s choice at the moment of the move, even though the queen is picked in the vast majority of cases. On a digital interface, you’ll usually need to select the desired piece from a menu that pops up the moment you promote.
